Software Screenshots – How To Edit

I will post some screenshots of the software im using (Final Cut Pro X) to show you how I managed to achieve some of my results. I will guide you through the different sectors of Final Cut, from the main timeline to the transition templates and title options.

This first screen shot shows the whole screen of the software. The screen is divided mainly into two parts: the bottom one where the timeline is and the options of music titles and transitions are. while the top one is dedicated to the visual aspect of the video. It shows the video you edited till now in a central rectangle which is reletavely big. On the right we have all the options you are invited to use. By selecting the part you want to edit, from the sound to the shot to the title, all the options of editing will appear in that box. The central rectangle also shows the sample of the various things you use to create your video, the templates the titles and so on.

On the bottom right had side we can see several little boxes on top of a big rectangle. These little images are the reference to the different things you add to your video: the Photo camera allows you to add images, the music note makes you chose the music soundtrack and sound effects, the next one allows you to choose the transitions, while the letter T deals with titles and templates you want to add to your video.

Once you have selected the title you want to use you can modify it on the top right square. Modifying a title is divided into three main groups: the “title” where you choose the colour of the font, the style of the writing alignment and so on; the “text” is where you write the phrase you want to use in your video, from there you can modify the size, the line spacing, the tracking, the kerning and base line. While the last one is “video” were you chose the colour the cropping and the trasformation of the title.

This image below shows the timeline. Its basically divided into sound line (green one) and video line (blue one). On top of the timeline we see written numebers whch refer to the length of the video till then. On the right hand side there is a little switch that gives you the option of changing the size of the timeline and the general aspect of it, as in make the sound line bigger in order to make it clearer if you want to change it.

My Product Classification Certificate

The idea i had for my title sequence was to make it the Intro/Theme Video for a Tv Series. The product aims at an adolescent audience, all the way to young adults of the age of 30 or so.  The TV show will have multiple genres as said in previous posts.
In the product there might be presence of:

  • strong violence
  • frequent strong language.
  • portrayals of sexual activity
  • strong verbal references to sex
  • sexual nudity
  • brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  • discriminatory language or behaviour
  • drug taking

The Editing Of My Title Sequence – Creative Ideas

IO decided to edit my title sequence with a quick cut to the beat appeal, i wanted to create a perfect balance through the elements with which i worked, like the sound the shots, the elements in the shots, the ideas to create and entertaining flow in the editing. And also this thrilling velocity of the images, naturally related to the name “The Haf Seen City” really manages to give an engaging emotion. The are all vital factors you need to take care of in order to create and appropriate sequence. The types of fonts and styles used in the video together with the colours had huge importance on the visual emotion the spectator has.

Throughout all the title sequence i used about 29 different titles: each one of them had his own look, the colours, the fonts, the sizes and templates made the titles very appealing and entertaining to watch.

For the first 5 titles i decided to use white and not another colour because the background was tricky to the spectators eyes so the best way was to keep it simple.

From there on the title started to take different shapes and colours and way to appear. I used 3 different templates to make the titles appear which are: glow (when the title appeared and disappear slowly), Crime (when the letters appeared in a random order), custom (where the title just appeared without a fade or anything)

Throughout all the sequence the titles appear when a specific note is played, generally the note is has more importance than others and manages to give  a bit of push to the video and the emotions given to the viewer. I decided to choose this specific type of style of editing because I always found it simple and complex at the same time, appealing as no other type of editing, it was the perfect way to engage the viewer to the product.

Once I arrived in the city of london everything was much clearer, I understood straight away which were actually the appropriate fonts and styles to use and especially  how to relate it to the correct shot. Creating a timeline of paper really helped me organising the ideas regarding the time and the amount of titles I could fit in the maximum 2 minutes long sequence. When th editing time arrived it was difficult to assemble everything and chose the best shots even because I had limited time and I could really fit all of the best ones unfortunately.

I decided to use this style because nowadays audience seeks more from television than the classic tv shows that are all the same while years go by, the audience whats to be shown something different, appealing and visually entertaining. The young audience really counts on the visual aspect of it, it has to be nice, timed well and full of different features in order to satisfy their desires fully.

Genre – The Genre Of My Title Sequence

My title sequence doesn’t really have a specific genre; the idea I had for my video was not to choose a straight forward genre to apply to the project but instead let the audience imagination fulfil they own wishes and desires. I could roughly say my title sequence has Comic Drama style. The sequence manages to enclose several genres as in Romantic Comedy, Drama, Thriller, in order to give the spectators a wide range of choice.

The micro features present in the video reminds us of a Tv Series title sequence; the lights, the signs on the streets, tell us many things, what you can find in the city what you will miss if you wont go. The lights in the city manage to give the video a unique atmosphere that easily captivates your attention. The skylines on the city and the building from far away puts you in a position of tourist, a turist which is entertained by the beautiful city he’s in.

The quick cut to the beat editing is put there in order to make you feel the rush you might feel if living in a city like London where noting stops and is in constant movement. When you live in a city like london timing is the only thing that can keep you there, this is reflected in the timing of the music and shots around the city in the video project.

In the Title Sequence you can find many different types of features that can make you remind of the genres as in the lights and specific shots taken, the type of font used to show the titles, the different templates with which images and names appear. I was really captivated by the idea of letting the audience chose a bit for me; By letting the audience think what they would like to be thinking i satisfy their whims and visual-entertaining desires and manage to attract their attention more that anything else. This is a great method to induce people to be curious enough to leave their everyday t programme and look for something different in the product we are offering.

Schermata 03-2456362 alle 21.14.26

The idea of the closest genre I want to give is a genre that relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters within the story plot. It is set in London one of the greatest biggest city’s of the entire world, where people, shops and pubs and clubs never close, a city were everything can happen and everything will happen. A mixture of ideas and genre manages to give to the product mesmerizing flow throughout the scenes and easily attracts young audiences attentions.

There aren’t any specific and clear narrative conventions in the video; the product only shows a perspective from a third person who is detached from the narrative. Basically lets the viewer think for himself without a clear outline of what will happen, the building the, shop signs, they all add up in order to entertain the viewer.
