Analysing several real media products before starting my project helped me to conclude the right way to achieve me objective. I saw several samples of real media products and the one that might get closer to mine is the television show “Suits” title sequence. Suits is a tv show shot in New York City and in the title sequence there are many shots of the city seen from a tourist point of view, most of them steady, similar to mines, others showed the skyline of the city like I did and so on. The three titles sequence I analysed at the start of the project might not be closely relevant to my product but helped me to organise all of my ideas and open my mind to different fields.
I can certainly say that I took the best out of every sample of real product I analysed, or seen in class with the rest of the students, by mixing them together I created a product that had specific characteristics that aimed at certain type of spectators and situations were to be watched. An aspect of my product that I developed is the timing within the titles; I made the titles appear in an entertaining way (with different colours, fonts and sizes), to the eyes of the viewer, in order to catch their attention. Maybe not like in most of the title sequences I’ve seen in my lifetime where they didn’t make titles interesting they just put them there because they had to. I developed this aspect by making titles interesting to the eyes of public.
The narrative of my product mainly follows the same path as Suits Title Sequence; Im setting the story up by using specific chosen features of the city; ares in the city where i could find what i had in mind (lights, colours, and many people), how i managed to film the various shots with different techniques (hand-held Camera, using a tripod, riding a motorbike while filming the various catchy building ad sites) and different types of shot taken from behind, underneath, above or really close and many others.
This part of the video is very shaky, i tried to use several methods to reduce the shakiness: Stabilizer in Final Cut Pro, Making the frame smaller in order not to show the shaky parts. Unfortunately after all i did the result didn’t change a lot, but i was happy because i looked in other circumstances how to solve the problem, looked for solutions in other fields this helped me to understand things like how the software and the camera features work and how i could make the video better just by using common knowledge in order to make my product more sophisticated and professional.
I chose a specific mise en scene, when I thought about shooting my Title Sequence at night, many problems came to my mind as in how is the camera going to react with all of this darkness but then I accepted the challenge and decided to find a solution to any problem stood in front of me. Regarding the darkness the camera in many occasions didn’t manage to keep a sufficient lighting, but my intention was to film areas and objects that shot light in order to create the perfect atmosphere. My idea was exactly what I was looking for: the atmosphere, the lighting managed to give the product a professional look and managed satisfy my initial idea.
I used this image as an example: as we can see the camera has a different reaction to light compared to our eyes, I had to think about this feature while choosing the spots where to shoot.
The genre I wanted my product to follow was mainly Comic Drama but as I already said, there isn’t a straight forward genre to it. I want the audience to choose for themselves. My product is the opening intro to a Tv Show, which follows several genres as in: comic, drama, action.. so I decided to leave the audience a bit on the edge in order to push them to see whats behind it.
The sound is non-diagetic the city is full of uncontrolled noises and for my situation it would have only made my product less appealing and less professional. I decided to take away all the sounds and use a catchy tune that could fit elegantly with the shots and the atmosphere of London at night. Special thanks for DJ PParanoia that allowed me to use of his songs.
We could apply Toderov’s Theory by saying that: the editing of the video creates a state of equilibrium through the images and the music which while it goes on reaches a climax (disruption of the equilibrium), to then re-stabilizes with a moment that can be felt as metaphorical feeling for liberation that turns out to be a “drop” regarding the music notes, which creates an intense moment followed by an entertaining quick cut to the beat editing that catches the viewer’s attention. This puts the equilibrium back to the original place in order to repeat the procedure and entertain the viewers again further on.
